Sports massage is designed around athletic loading patterns, taking into account the demands of your sport, your training phase and your recovery needs. Deep tissue massage is more focused on chronic restriction and works through multiple tissue layers. In practice they overlap significantly. The assessment at the start of each session determines which techniques are most appropriate.
Effective sports massage can be uncomfortable. Working into restricted tissue produces a "good hurt" sensation. It should never be sharp, breathtaking pain. Alexander works at a pressure level that produces the therapeutic effect without unnecessary discomfort. If anything is too much, say so and the pressure is adjusted immediately.
Impossible to say with certainty before assessment. A single acute issue might resolve in 2–3 sessions. A chronic pattern that has been building for years may take 8–12. After your first session Alexander will give you a realistic range based on your actual presentation, not a number designed to sell you more sessions.
Wear or bring clothing that allows access to the area being treated. For lower limb work: shorts. For back or shoulder work: a vest or loose top. Treatment is performed on a therapy table. Draping is used and your modesty is maintained throughout.
